Everything You Need to Know About Shingles

Shingles is an infection caused by a virus (also known as varicella-zoster virus) that appears anywhere in the body but more commonly in the torso. It is similar to chickenpox, as they are both caused by the same type of virus. Once you’ve had chickenpox, it becomes dormant but after many years, it may reappear in the form of shingles. It is not life-threatening but is very painful.

The most common symptoms of shingles include but are not limited to itching, sensitivity to touch, burning, numbness, pain, tingling, red rashes, and blisters with fluid. These usually happen in one area of the body. Some people experience these symptoms more intensely than others.

Shingles may cause skin infections if not treated properly. It may also lead to neurological problems depending on the affected area of the brain. These may include facial paralysis, encephalitis, or balance or hearing complications. If the rash appears near your eye, see a doctor immediately. Ophthalmic shingles may cause vision loss.

To reduce your risk of shingles, getting a vaccine can help. Just like getting flu shots for flu, a preventive treatment can help lessen the probability of infection.
